On October 31 2011, the United States announced that it would no longer fund UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The move followed a vote by UNESCO members to offer grant the Palestinians membership in the UN-body.
The US maintains that membership of UNESCO, and other UN bodies, should only be offered to the Palestinian Authority as part-and-parcel of a comprehensive Middle East peace agreement.
