Simon’s work as a broadcast consultant has helped several news organizations overhaul their operations, train their staff in the implementation of integrated, “platform-neutral” production processes, and build audiences as a result.
His experience building Feature Story News as a multi-platform, flexible organization staffed by multi-skilled digital journalists has helped Simon develop unparalleled experience managing cutting-edge broadcast-and-online environments.
Simon was a key member of the team that re-launched America’s PBS NewsHour on-air and on-line in December 2009. He helped the program create a digital newsroom, and trained staff in new production workflows that emphasize flexibility, high quality and cost-effectiveness. The newsroom was specially designed to accommodate journalists working for both the traditional PBS nightly newscast, and its companion digital operation. By co-locating the team in one newsroom equipped with state-of-the-art ingest and editing equipment, the two teams rapidly merged their journalistic efforts, shared skill-sets, and built audiences for both the NewsHour’s on-air and digital product.
Other organizations that have turned to Simon for his input include the Washington-based National Journal Group. The publishers of leading titles including “National Journal”, “The Atlantic” and “Congress Daily” asked Simon to provide media training for many of their leading writers, and develop a plan to expand National Journal’s visibility on US airwaves.
Simon has also worked closely with America Abroad Media, helping to develop its monthly radio program in the United States, and offering consultancy advice in the development of AAM’s television projects. From providing nuts-and-bolts production advice, to assisting AAM staff with budgetary planning, Simon has watched America Abroad develop serious-minded audio-visual content for audiences in the US and overseas.

These “online-only” videos helped viewers learn more about upcoming editions of the newscast, and also built the audience’s bond with the NewsHour brand by encouraging viewers to peak behind-the-curtain as Simon and his...
